Singapore Zoo's iconic orangutan dies

Ah Meng, the Singapore Zoo's famous orangutan, died of old age on Friday at around 48 years of age, the zoo said.

She was a major attraction at the zoo and was probably the most photographed primate in the world. She was also one of the oldest orangutans in captivity.

Born in the rainforests on Indonesia's Sumatra Island around 1960, she had been with the zoo since 1971 after she was confiscated from a Chinese family in Singapore who had kept her illegally as a pet.
